Dear Twitter friends,

As Paul McCartney once said, hello, goodbye.

Rumours of my demise have been greatly exaggerated. Truth is, I’ve decided to give Twitter a break for the time being. If you’re reading this, you may be looking for an explanation as to why, so here it is.

I haven’t been enjoying it for a while now. There hasn’t been a specific incident and the reasons are various. Ultimately, I think we’ve just grown apart. What I’m saying is, it’s not you, it’s me.

To those of you, who have regularly sent me messages and supported me, I say thank you and please be in no doubt you are appreciated and valued. Your creativity, passion and positivity is always inspiring.

In the meantime, I’m going to concentrate on the real world and keep working hard. There’s a lot of really fun stuff coming up and there is still every chance you will be sick of me, in no time at all.

Presently, the account will reactivate and Harmony Carrigan aka @MyDogAteLA will head up an official team to run it as an offshoot of the long running Peggster website, which is 10 years old this year. If you’re interested in news from the Pegg camp and information regarding the various charities I support, then don’t touch that dial. It will however, no longer be my own voice.

Take care Tweeple and remember to use your powers for good.

Love from

Simon x

P.S. The Star Wars trailer is fucking AWESOME, right?!!!!!!

Actor/writer - Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Paul, World's End. Also, secret agent, starship engineer and diesel weasel. GSOH. Must love dogs.

I admit, I just came here for that last sentence.

    FRACKING YES!!!

Although your superb tweets will be greatly missed on our feeds ;)

  2. Rose Landrum

I love your movies and you are a great person in every way . i have a request from you. can i have a autographed picture of you ? if you have the time , i am poor and can not get a gift for my boyfriend of 17 years and i am sure, Jason ( my boyfriend ) would love the gift. thanks in advance, you are my Hero. love and light to you.

  3. stevejbeck

Ah that’s a shame, but I hear ya! I’ve been on Twitter since 2008 and used to tweet all the time but now it’s only every now-and-again. I hope it’s not THE end of you actually tweeting, tho.

  4. Dave

Please lose the pipe. Pipe smoking is the source of multiple types of aggressive cancer, including mouth, tongue, throat and, of course, lung cancer. You are far more valuable to us all and to yourself whole.

  5. Lissie

I’ll miss seeing you on my TL but I understand :)

I’m just glad that I’ve been lucky enough to meet you because you’re a hell of a guy.

Also, YES!!!!! STAR WARS!! MY HEART! I cried a bit :) <3

  6. Jon

Just be careful so you won’t be so disappointed you have to make another season of Spaced to went your anger, frustration and sorrow. Not that I’d say no to another season of Spaced :)

  7. Emm

Checking your Twitter everyday to see if you’ve tweeted has been a highlight for me for the past few years. I have depression and anxiety and you’re one of the things that makes me smile and feel calm. I will miss having your voice in my feed and I’ll especially miss your lovely selfies. :) It’s weird how someone you’ve never met can become like a part of your life that you kind of rely on. I’m sorry you haven’t been enjoying Twitter much lately. Your happiness is important, so I support your decision to leave even though I will miss you. I’m so looking forward to all your upcoming projects. Take care, Simon. <3

I’m not one of those who has regularly sent you messages, but I’ve been here, and still will be.
Do what you need, real life happens whether you are there or not.
Better to be there I think.

    Background again for me.

  9. James Stewart

Fair enough, sad to see you go!

And hell yeah that Star Wars trailer is fucking immense. I got chills when the Falcon came on and the TIE fighters roared towards it.

All the best and thanks for being my 22nd favourite person to follow on Twiiter.

  10. Heather Murray

I think that your making a good choice everyone needs to go into the real world for a while just to try new things and be human!
Heather X Age 14 England P.S. Oh my croft yes the new Star Wars trailer looks amazing I khan’t wait for it!!

  11. caryeese dou

I tweeted you once a day, every day for an entire year. Cannot wait to see what you are doing next creatively, and you aren’t the only one to get jaded by Twitter. Good luck!

  12. Tracy Jane

I have just joined Twitter and am sad I won’t be able to follow you as I am a huge fan of you and Nick….I totally loved you in Star Trek and truly hope there will be another film, in the not too distant future, or distant galaxy even! My favourite character you have acted is Nicholas Angel in Hot Fuzz, god I love that film, as does my hubby but Paul is his favourite film of yours. Good luck and success with everything you have planned.

  13. Susan Tooker

Completely understand, Simon, You take care of your awesome self. I certainly will miss your tweets, humor, and optimism, but I will follow your work to the end of the world!

And as far as the trailer……. I confess. I cried.

  14. Natalia

You “blockbusting quotes” will be very missed… :(
I wish you, as always, all the best in your present and future adventures!
    Take care! xxx

Last night, “@simonpegg doesn’t exist”. Oh really?? Well, it could be another prank.

    Today,
I just woke up and the first thing I do is checking the twitter, to see if maybe I had a bad dream. And then i read this post..
    And it hurts..
Oh dear Simon, don’t you know how easily you make me smile with your hilarious tweets? Checking your twitter before sleep it’s like a great relief from the crazy day. It’s been a great time to have someone who’s been inspiring you, and bring joy to you, even though you’ve never met him. I think It’ll take some time before I can finally get used to not see you in my timeline. You’re the funniest, most wonderful person I’ve ever know. This is sad to know I won’t hear your voices again, but all the best for you, chief! Be happy! I’m gonna miss you every now and then *Kiss hug*

You will be missed terribly. I love reading your twitter feed. Alas, I believe there will be no good reason for me to check the twitter from now on… I adore your work, and will continue to await the next installment of your genius breathlessly! Best of luck; I hope that “paying attention to the real world” thing works out for you :)

  18. Lisa Lowe

Sad to see you go, and wishing it was either work-related or temporary. Social media has a tendency to bring out anti-social behavior in some, and if “normal people” get tired of it, it’s difficult to imagine how much worse it is for someone who makes a living in the public eye.
Thank you for your time, your patience – and for just being, well, you.

(Shame you’re not taller, though. I could’ve enjoyed illicit thoughts.) :)

  19. Nicholas

I don’t have a twitter account, but your twitter was one of the only ones I would check out as a huge fan of everything you do. There are still plenty of ways to keep updated like this awesome official site. Thank you for everything you do, you are a constant inspiration and always will be. Simon rules!!!

  20. dolfyn

I’ll be honest, this makes me very sad. Simon was the reason I joined Twitter, & any acknowledgement from him always made my day. I hope he comes back to feel the love.
    *sniff sniff sob* :(

  21. Andrea Halliwell

I’m deeply saddened by the fact that I won’t see you on Twitter anymore. I understand your reasons and will always support you in whatever you do. I love you more than words can describe.

  22. joshua

I’ve just seen your cameo in Cuban Fury – brilliant!! ;)

  26. Wayne

I’ve never really been a twitter man, I do keep an eye on facebook though!

As for the SW trailer … OMG too right! seeing the millennium falcon in action again, gave me the shivers, literally!

Hibye, Simon. We met and spoke last year, and I found you pleasingly not intolerable. I’m not a raving fan, and I find most franchise reboots dubious at best. But your presence is appreciated. Thanks for being fun. Oh, and don’t be such a Twitter pussy. Stay in touch. Sincerely, Gregory

  38. Andrea Halliwell

Twitter isn’t the same without you, Simon; so I deleted it from my phone. I keep it active for Harmony only now. I miss you.

  39. aini

Twitter is not the same with you Simon.. I used to wake up, scrol down my timeline and always stuck with ur tweets.. i missed that but yeah have fun there! Cant wait for the next movies and hell ya Star wars trailer was ace. I miss you~ Love from Indonesia :)

  40. Wen

I was wondering how I was gonna show appreciation in 140 characters for your latest movie (Hector and the search for happiness) and how happy it made me feel. To not find you, the real you, in Twitter just basically sucks ass. Thanks for the laughs, the deep thoughts, and the snarky-yet-lovable daily remarks. I’ll miss you :D

  41. Wolfsheart9

Sweet sweet man. You’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do. Sure, I’ll miss your wacky voice and your stories about your daughter and walking your dog, but I’m a fan no matter what. We all need breaks from the online world sometimes. Take care!

  42. amanda

twitter sucks – it sucks even more without you – congrats on escaping into the real world, i hear it’s much better there…plan on getting there myself very soon! xx

  43. Clare Blair

I want you to know even though I respect your decision, it saddens me to the core to know you’re not there anymore. Going through cancer is hard enough, but without your wit to make me laugh, and to know that I’m just another blip on the planet makes me sad. Goodbye Mr. Pegg

  44. Clare Blair

P.S. Please write a big part for Scotty. The original, James Doohan, took time in the parking lot of a convention just to take pictures and talk to my sister and I, and he didn’t have to do that. It is one of my fondest memories. Now they charge ridiculous prices for that and more for a signature. I would want that connection when you talk to another person. It may be o.k. for some but not all of us have money. Just F.Y.I.

  45. James firman

There is no chance you’ll read this, but I say it anyway…..I understand your writing the new startrek story, could you perhaps maybe restore the timeline. Also startrek was always about inspiring people with space exploration. Ask anyone at NASA over the age of 30 why the joined and an overwhelming number will say it was watching kirk explore the universe. Startrek used to be amazing, you of all people should recognize the great responsibility you now have to restore the spirt of the franchise and move away from explosions and concentrate more with the story.

    Just a thought.

  46. robert Boulton

Yes social media is running amok (yes amok time lol). I enjoyed all of your movies, very intelligent and well made and I must say very refreshing. I have a great story idea to correct the time line in the Star Trek Movie reboot (I read you are a co-writer). I wish I had a way to submit the idea to someone, I do not want recognition but to see the timeline fixed/restored so all my old Star Trek DVDs become relavant again lol. I will give you a clue, it involves the Telosians (better known as the buttheads). Keep up the great work!!

  47. Andie Halliwell

Respectfully requesting a check-in with your website and blog, Sir. I certainly would love to see your words again. Perhaps think about popping in and saying hello to those who miss you dearly.
