Deadline: Simon Pegg & Nick Frost’s Stolen Picture To Adapt Ben Aaronovitch’s Epic Fantasy Drama ‘Rivers of London’

Stolen Picture, the production company set up by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, is to adapt Ben Aaronovitch’s epic fantasy drama Rivers of London.

The Rivers of London series follows Peter Grant, no relation to the infamous Led Zeppelin manager, an ordinary police constable turned magician’s apprentice as he solves crimes across the British capital with a blend of urban fantasy, mystery thriller and fantasy caper. The franchise has sold over 2.5M copies worldwide.

The first book, which is known as Midnight Riot in the U.S., sees Grant as he attempts to solve a puzzling murder with information from an eyewitness who happens to be a ghost. He then works with Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale, who investigates crimes involving magic and other manifestations of the uncanny. After, as a wave of brutal and bizarre murders engulfs the city, Grant is plunged into a world where gods and goddesses mingle with mortals and a long-dead evil is making a comeback on a rising tide of magic.

Frost told Deadline that he first read the book on holiday years ago. “Suddenly we were in a position where I said ‘there’s this book that I loved’ and it became available, more or less. I was chuffed to bits that I could get the rights to make it into a TV show,” he said. “Everyone wants to potentially find the next Game of Thrones and the chance to turn Rivers of London into an eight-hour movie and hopefully find someone who will financially back that is a real draw.”

Variety: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost Pact With Up-and-Coming Writers on YA Projects

Stolen Picture, the production company founded by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, has launched a new drama initiative to work with up-and-coming writers on young-adult projects, with two series already in development.

The first project from the Rights Incubator initiative, “We Never Sleep,” is a detective comedy-thriller that will tackle bullying, justice, morality, mental health and post-Brexit small-town life. “Chemistry,” the second project, is a fast-paced genre hybrid that will pose questions about what it means to be human as the show follows protagonists on the run for their survival.

Pegg and Frost formed London-based Stolen Picture with former Fox Searchlight and Bad Wolf executive Miles Ketley last year. There has been keen interest in the new indie banner’s projects, given the founders’ loyal following and string of film and TV hits.

Horror comedy movie “Slaughterhouse Rulez” is in production, and half-hour paranormal investigator comedy “Truth Seekers” is in development. “Time and again, we’ve found that our projects – be they comedy, horror, sci-fi or straight drama – are speaking to YA audiences and so we wanted to ensure that authentic YA voices were at the heart of these projects,” Ketley said.

Variety: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost Talk Stolen Picture and Their First Series, ‘Truth Seekers’

British film and TV stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost formed indie producer Stolen Picture last year, and with their first movie coming out this year, a TV series in the offing, and a growing development slate, they talked to Variety about their plans to take their inimitable brand of comedy and drama to the big and small screen.

Pegg and Frost are both men in demand. Frost will be seen in “Tomb Raider,” Dwayne Johnson wrestling comedy “Fighting With My Family,” and stars in AMC TV drama “Into the Badlands.” Pegg has a Paramount project in the works, will star alongside Margot Robbie in thriller “Terminal,” and is finishing the delayed “Mission: Impossible 6.”

But now the pair say they are “breaking free of our past commitments” and “eventually everything will be Stolen Picture.” At one time Frost thought he and Pegg would produce only movies, but the world has changed. “In terms of where the money is being made, and creatively, making episodic television is now no less nourishing than a two-hour movie,” he says.

The co-founders actually started out in TV, with revered Channel 4 comedy series “Spaced,” which provided a launchpad for Edgar Wright-directed “Shaun of the Dead” and then “Hot Fuzz” and “The World’s End.” Their first TV project at Stolen Picture is “Truth Seekers,” a half-hour comedy-horror about a three-person paranormal investigation team.

Each installment of “Truth Seekers” will focus on a paranormal incident, a setup with clear monster-of-the-week potential. “Each episode is going to be an adventure, a potential haunting or something,” Pegg says. “It’ll start as a very parochial idea, a very small business venture for these people, but it will expand as the series goes on to be something far more global. It’s a language everyone understands, the mystery of the unknown. ‘Shaun of the Dead’ was a very parochial story set in North London and somehow it managed to get this global reach because everyone understands the language of zombie movies.”

Stolen Picture, launched by Pegg and Frost earlier this year, has also poached Bad Wolf exec Miles Ketley as CEO.

Stolen Picture, the U.K.-based production banner launched by Simon Pegg and his long-term collaborator Nick Frost in May this year, has found itself a major backer.

Sony Corp.’s Sony Pictures Television said Wednesday that it has taken a minority stake in the company, while also signing an exclusive TV distribution deal. Financial details weren’t disclosed.

Alongside signing with Sony, Stolen Picture has named Miles Ketley as CEO. Ketley, a former Fox Searchlight executive, was previously COO at indie production company Bad Wolf.

“Nick and Simon are good friends of the Sony group already, and this deal will help us take things to the next level,” said SPT’s chief creative officer for international production, Wayne Garvie. “I’m sure that their boundless zest and creativity, coupled with Miles’ insight and energy, will help build Stolen Picture into an exceptional production company.”

Said Pegg and Frost, who first worked together on the cult U.K. TV series Spaced in 1999: “We’re inordinately excited to be partnering with Sony and hope to create a diverse range of television and film in line with our own sensibilities. More than that we hope to receive free Walkmans and a lifetime’s supply of cassettes.”

Stolen Picture is currently in postproduction on its first project, the comedy horror Slaughterhouse Rulez, starring Finn Cole, Asa Butterfield, Hermione Corfield and Michael Sheen, alongside Pegg and Frost. Sony Pictures Releasing International has worldwide rights to distribute.

Simon Pegg & Nick Frost Launch Stolen Picture Banner With Comedy-Horror ‘Slaughterhouse Rulez’

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, who co-starred in hit British comedies Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Paul, have formed the film and TV production banner Stolen Picture. The duo will kick open its doors with Slaughterhouse Rulez, marking their return to the comedy-horror genre.

Slaughterhouse Rulez is set in an elite boarding school – Welcome to Slaughterhouse – where boys and girls are groomed for power and greatness and they’re about to meet their match. The story’s hero, Don Wallace, is a wide-eyed new boy from a modest background forced to navigate a baffling new world of arcane rules and rituals, presided by sadistic sixth formers. Matters of status are aggressively enforced and conversation with school goddess Clemsie, are strictly forbidden.

But this ancient and ordered world is about to be shaken to its foundations – literally – when a controversial frack site on prize school woodland causes seismic tremors, a mysterious sinkhole and an unspeakable horror is unleashed. Soon a new pecking order will be established as pupils, teachers and the school matron become locked in a bloody battle for survival.

Based in the UK, Stolen Picture will look for film and television projects geared towards a global audience. The company will aim to produce a variety of scripted entertainment in line with Pegg and Frost’s unique brand.
